FREE PATTERN: Yoda Baby Hat

EDITED PATTERN ON 7/13/2018: It was brought to my attention that there were errors in the stitch counts for some of the rounds on the ears. It has been fixed. I'm so sorry for any confusion! This is just a hobby for me, so I'm still learning. :-)

-----------------------------------------

A friend recently asked me to make a Yoda hat for her baby boy, and my search for the perfect free pattern came up short. I wanted one with double-thickness ears so that they would hold their shape well, and just a basic double-crochet hat to keep things simple.

So, here is what I came up with. I'm only including the 6-12 month size, but may add other sizes in the future.

Size: 6-12 months (8" across, stretches to fit 16-18" head circumference)
**You can also use any basic crochet hat pattern if you have a favorite, and then just use the instructions for the ears below.

Materials:

-Worsted weight yarn in the Yoda color of your choice (I used Red Heart Super Saver in Frosty Green)
-Size I (5.5mm) crochet hook
-Yarn needle for weaving in ends
-Stitch marker

Note: Each round is joined with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the round. The next stitch of the following round will be made in the SAME stitch. Chain (1 or 2) does NOT count as a stitch.

Hat:

Start with a magic circle, ch2.
Round 1: 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2, *2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next st.** Repeat around. (36 dc)
Round 4: Ch 2, *2dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 2 sts.** Repeat around. (48 dc)
Round 5: Ch 2, *2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 7 sts.** Repeat around (54 dc)
Round 6-11: Ch 2, dc evenly around (54 dc)

First Ear flap:

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in next 10 stitches, turn. Do NOT chain.
Row 2: Skip first sc, sc in next 9 stitches, turn.
Row 3: Skip first sc, sc in next 8 stitches, turn.
Row 4: Skip first sc, sc in next 7 stitches, turn.
Row 5: Skip first sc, sc in next 6 stitches, turn.
Row 6: Skip first sc, sc in next 5 stitches, turn.
Row 7: Skip first sc, sc in next 4 stitches, turn.
Row 8: Skip first sc, sc in next 3 stitches, turn.
Row 9: Skip first sc, sc in next 2 stitches. Finish off.

Second Ear flap:

Count 22 st to the left of the first ear flap. Join yarn with a sl st, ch 1.
Row 1: Sc in same stitch as join and next 9 stitches, turn.
Do not turn.

Edging & Ties:

Ch 1 and sc evenly down the side of the second ear flap and around until the tip of the first ear flap. *Ch 30, and sc in the back "bump" of the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch.** Continue to sc around the edge to the second ear flap, repeat from * to **, join last stitch with a sl st to the first sc. Finish off and weave in ends.

Ears (Make 2):

Make 2 ears, each using the instructions below. Each round is joined with a slip stitch, and the chain 1 does not count as a stitch.

Magic circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 5 sc in ring. (5 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc (5 sc)
Round 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 4 (6 sc)
Round 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next. Repeat around (9 sc)
Round 5: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 2. Repeat around (12 sc)
Round 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 5. Repeat around(14 sc)
Round 7-10: Ch 1, sc in each st around (14 sc)
Round 11: Ch 1, *sc2tog, sc in next 5**. Repeat around. (12 sc)
Round 12: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 3. Repeat around (15 sc)
Round 13: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 4. Repeat around (18 sc)
Round 14: Ch 1, *2 sc in first st, sc in next 3**. Repeat from * to ** 3 times, sc in last 2. (22 sc)
Round 15-18: Ch 1, sc evenly around (22 sc)
Round 19: Ch 1, *sc2tog twice, sc in next 7 st.** Repeat from * to ** once. (18 sc)
Round 20: Ch 1, *sc2tog twice, sc in next 5 st.** Repeat from * to ** once. (14 sc)
Round 21: Ch 1, *sc2tog, sc in next 5.** Repeat from * to **. (12 sc) Finish off with a long tail for sewing.

Using the tail, flatten the ears and sew one onto each side of the hat between rounds 7-9.

  1. Thanks so much for this wonderful and fun pattern. I just finished it for a friend of mine. I just wanted to mention that you may want to take a look at the ear part of the pattern. I believe there are some corrections that need to be made to rows 5 and 12. Again, thanks so much!

    1. Wwhat were the issues you had and what corrections did you make by chance?? :-)

  2. I had the same issue. In the pattern for the ears the number of stitches you should have at the end of a round didn't always match the instructions of the pattern. Here are my corrections to the pattern:
    - after the magic circle I skipped the ch1, because it gave a strange lump
    - round 7-10 have 13 stitches
    - therefore round 11 only has 11 stitches
    - to go from 11 to 16 stitches in round 12 you have to 2 sc in the first 5 stitches, then sc in the remaining stitches
    - rounds 13-20 were good
    - round 21 should be *sc2tog, sc in next 4 stitches. The original pattern would finish in 12 stitches. Personally I found the decrease instructions confusing. Once I figured it out, the 'over first two st' is redundant in my opinion, since this is part of the sc2tog.

Hope you can use these corrections to make the pattern better. Thank you for the effort of creating it and making it public for all of our enjoyment!

    1. In addition: I went about the ears as the pattern for the hat, which means that I started rounds 2-21 with a ch1. You did at the 'ch1 doesn't count as a st' instruction, but didn't add the ch1 in the pattern like you did with the hat. It made sense to me to do it after the hat, but it isn't written into the rounds.

  3. I still can't figure out how to fix the ears. I too am having trouble with the stitch count but when Martje said starting in round 13 it was good I was still off. I'm sure it's just me. I have the hat portion done and it's adorable. Does someone happen to have it written out with the corrections? I'm a decent crocheter but definitely not an expert. I have to have a pattern to complete it. haha. Thanks for any help.

    1. Jessica, I'm so sorry for my delay in responding! Life just got in the way and I'd set my blog aside. I just went through and edited the instructions for the ears, so hopefully they are correct now. Please let me know if you try my pattern out again, and if you have issues. :)

  4. Thanks to all the ladies who have jumped in and pointed out the errors in the Ears portion of the pattern! I'm sorry for not responding earlier; my blog got set to the side for a while and I didn't even think that there were others out there reading it! :-) It's been edited now, nearly 4 years later! Ha! Thanks for bearing with me! <3

  6. This is a fab, easy pattern that works up really well! The ears turned out fine for me, so the pattern update obviously worked :) Thank you very much for sharing this free pattern - I’m looking forward to giving the finished hat as a present to our friends for their soon-to-be-born baby!

  7. Row 14 for the ears needs to be revised as well it says 2sc in first stitch then sc in next 3 repeat 3 times then sc in last 2 stitches but after I repeat it 3 times I still have 6 stitches left not 2

  8. I don’t quite understand the ear flaps… are they separate pieces or just continuation from the hat some how?
